Guess what? I'm in a hurry this week, and so it is another short email from me. Sorry.
This past week was the anniversary of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. When a member asked me about it, I didn't know what she was talking about at first. I finally figured out what she was talking about, and I said that most Americans don't know when we dropped the atomic bombs. She was in disbelief. "How can you not remember when you killed so many innocent people?" (Ok, so those weren't her exact words, but that is the feeling that her words conveyed). I had nearly the same conversation the next day, and the next day, with people we met on the streets. They all asked me "Are you going to apologize?"
It was really hard for me to answer those questions. First, WWII was before my time. In fact, it was even before my parents were alive. Also, the a-bombs were the end of the war for Japan. For America, the war kept going on in Europe.
So basically I told all of those people that I didn't know what to say, but as missionaries we are sharing a message about peace. Most of them weren't satisfied by that, but it was the best answer that I had. On the flip side, I found it interesting that no Japanese people know December 7. I guess each country remembers what effected them most.
An interesting thing that I realized last night: Sunday was the one year mark of receiving my mission call. How crazy is that? I actually finished my first journal this past week, so I am on to another journal.
Well, since time is short, that is about it for the week.
