Whale sushi and fried whale?
Hello!
It was so great to hear from all of you. That phone was just too short! And it's the last one! I still have so much time left in Japan, but it seems like the end is creeping up on me all too quick.
Anyways, you may think that I have little to write about since we just talked two days ago...but you would be wrong! The last few days have been crazy! So, after my call with the family, I had District Training Meeting. It was a decent meeting (but it could have been better if I had prepared more). After DTM our Zone Leader in Kushiro (Elder Lemme) notified us that he had to be in Sapporo by the end of the day (because he is the new AP). Because he was leaving Kushiro, he needed me to go there and become companions with Elder Kawahara until transfers. So we hurriedly ate, and then I hopped on the train to Kushiro. I had to ride for an hour and a half by myself, and it was sort of weird having no companion. But I had some good thinking time.
Once I arrived in Kushiro, Elder Lemme headed off to Sapporo and I got to spend the rest of the day with Elder Kawahara. We were able to teach a couple good lessons and set a baptismal date! On Monday night I got a phone call from President Daniels, and I am one of the new Zone Leaders in the Obihiro zone. It is sort of scary, but I feel ready for it. My new companion will be Elder Lawry, who I have only met once before. He was trained by Elder Yoneda when I left Higashi, and he is going on his sixth transfer now. He lived in Japan (Tokyo?) before his mission, so I am pretty sure that his Japanese is better than mine.
Also coming to our apartment will be Elder Shoji, the other new Zone Leader. He is without a doubt the weirdest missionary in the Sapporo Mission, but he is a lot of fun. It is going to be a great learning experience for us as we work together and try to figure how to be good Zone Leaders.
Yesterday we worked really hard in Kushiro and taught a lot of lessons. I really love Kushiro. Too bad I will probably never serve full-time here. Right now we are emailing at the Kushiro church. It is one of the priviledged churches in our mission that actually has internet for the missionaries to use.
Today has been a good p-day. Since I found myself in Kushiro this week, I decided to take advantage of the situation. Kushiro is known to have some of the best sushi in all of Hokkaido. So Elder Kawahara and I ate lunch at a really good sushi place. Best yet, I ate whale! That's right, whale! I had whale sushi and fried whale. It is actually really tasty, and it doesn't taste like fish. After lunch we went to a shopping mall to pick up a suit for Elder Lemme, who bought the suit last week and had it altered (but he's in Sapporo now, and thus he couldn't pick it up). The suits were way cheap (about $65), and I was going to buy one. But, they didn't have my size. In fact, I found out that my size is pretty hard to find in Japan. I am just big, much bigger than Japanese people, especially my shoulders.
That is about it. The missionaries coming from the MTC this week got pushed back a day, so our transfer day switched from Thursday to Friday. And Friday and Saturday are going to be the Zone Leader council in Sapporo. So I won't be back in my own area until Saturday night! My numbers are going to be no good this week. Good thing it's the people, and not the numbers, that are important.
I love you all. Have a great week.
Elder Christensen
